Everyone holds biases. These develop through lived experience, social norms and organisational systems, and they can influence how we interpret situations, make decisions and interact with others. While bias is often unintentional, its impact on colleagues, tenants and service users can be significant.
This course supports staff to develop a deeper awareness of bias and how it operates at individual, team and organisational levels. Participants explore where bias comes from, how it can show up in everyday workplace contexts, and why it matters in housing services and decision making.
The session recognises that addressing bias is not a one‑off activity. Instead, it supports participants to begin building awareness, reflection and practical approaches that can be applied over time. The training is available as a half‑day or full‑day session, allowing organisations to choose the level of depth most appropriate to their needs.
Half‑day session focuses on:
- Understanding what bias is and how it develops
- Exploring common sources of bias and how these can influence judgement
- Reflecting on personal bias and everyday decision making
- Identifying where bias matters within the organisation
- Considering practical actions that can be taken to reduce the impact of bias
Full‑day session also includes:
- Deeper exploration of the psychology and theory behind bias
- Time to tailor discussion to organisational context and priorities
- Applied exercises linked to specific areas of work, such as:
- HR, recruitment and staff development
- Allocations and lettings
- Anti‑social behaviour responses
- Tenant participation and engagement
- Cultural change, dignity at work and harassment
The full‑day option allows participants to move beyond awareness and focus on how bias can be challenged more effectively through systems, processes and everyday practice.
