When does banter stop being harmless and start causing harm? This short session explores where the line sits, why it matters, and how to respond when workplace banter crosses it.

Course objectives

This 60‑minute session is part of our Let’s Talk About… series and explores the role of banter in workplace culture.

Banter can be a way of building relationships and shared understanding at work. However, when boundaries are unclear or ignored, it can cause offence, reinforce exclusion, or amount to bullying or discrimination.

This interactive session does not promote a ‘no banter’ or ‘no jokes’ culture. Instead, it supports participants to understand what banter is, what it is not, and how it can be experienced differently by different people. The session explores real‑life examples and considers how to respond when banter crosses the line.

Participants are supported to reflect on their own workplace context and consider practical steps to support respectful, inclusive environments.

Sessions can be tailored to organisational context.
