Language shapes how we see the world and how we relate to others. This session explores why words matter, how language can cause harm or inclusion, and why awareness of language is essential in everyday work.

Course objectives

This 60‑minute session is part of our Let’s Talk About… series and focuses on the role language plays in shaping attitudes, behaviour and relationships at work and in services.

Language is a powerful tool. The words we use can communicate respect and inclusion, but they can also reinforce stereotypes, exclusion or offence, often without intent. This session supports participants to reflect on how language affects colleagues, customers, partners and communities.

The session explores how labels, terminology and commonly used phrases can impact people differently, and why certain words or expressions may cause harm.

Participants are encouraged to consider debates around language, including so‑called ‘political correctness’, and to examine how language choices connect to equality, dignity and inclusion.

The session provides space for reflection and discussion, helping participants build greater confidence in using inclusive, respectful language in everyday practice.
