Intersectionality, noun. How do different aspects of identity overlap, and why does this matter for inclusion, equality and fairness? This session explores why an intersectional approach is essential if people are not to be left behind.

Course objectives

This 60‑minute session is part of our Let’s Talk About… series and introduces the concept of intersectionality in a clear and accessible way.

The Equality Act 2010 protects people from discrimination across nine protected characteristics, which are often considered separately. Intersectionality recognises that people experience multiple aspects of identity at the same time and that discrimination and disadvantage can overlap and interact in complex ways.

This session supports participants to understand how intersecting identities can shape people’s experiences of services, work and organisations. Using practical examples, participants are encouraged to consider how data, policy and practice may overlook those who sit at the intersections of multiple forms of disadvantage.

The session focuses on why an intersectional approach matters and how it can support more effective, fair and inclusive decision making in organisations.

Sessions can be tailored to organisational context.
