An awareness‑raising session exploring the experiences, cultures and world views of people seeking sanctuary, and supporting staff to work more respectfully and effectively with refugee communities.

Course objectives

The diversity of our towns and cities has changed rapidly over the past two decades. How much do you know about the cultures, experiences, and world views of those seeking sanctuary in your area?

This course supports staff to better understand the experiences of people seeking sanctuary and the realities faced by refugee and asylum‑seeking communities.
The session explores what it means to seek asylum in Wales and the UK, challenging common misconceptions and promoting accurate understanding. Participants gain insight into the asylum process, the impact of displacement and migration, and the cultural and social factors that shape people’s experiences.

The course also supports staff to consider how services are experienced by people seeking sanctuary, with a focus on cultural awareness, trauma‑informed practice and building effective, respectful relationships.

The training is delivered through a multi-media approach and explores personal experiences and extensive knowledge gained through direct lived experiences of working with Refugee Communities. Training takes a very flexible approach and can be tailored to suit organisations’ requirements.

Important

This session includes a trigger warning. Content and discussion may be emotionally and intellectually challenging. This is intended to allow participants to make informed choices about their wellbeing and learning. This training is delivered as part of a social enterprise model. All facilitator fees directly support charitable work with refugee communities in Newport.
